Building the Search Index

Indexing the content on your site in a way that facilitates effective, fast, and intelligent searching is a computationally expensive operation. Therefore, Drupal performs indexing in batches during scheduled cron.php tasks. This means that the search index will not be built, and the search functions will not work, unless you have configured scheduled cron.php tasks.

The second ramification of this fact is that new content will not be found by searching until a cron.php task has been run, so you will need to schedule these tasks frequently enough to keep the index up-to-date. If your site receives new content frequently, the scheduled tasks must also be run relatively frequently. Refer to Chapter 6 for instructions on configuring scheduled tasks.
