Figure 10.14 Activating Akismet is as simple as clicking the Activate link and providing your API key.

This API (application programming interface) key is a way for the people at Akismet to track the sources of spam comments. Getting a key may seem like an annoyance, but the key is used to log which comments are being reported as spam. This tracking ensures that legitimate comments aren't being identified as spam for nefarious purposes (and vice versa).

To get an API key, you need to sign up for a profile at WordPress.com. (Don't worry; it's free.) After you get your profile, click Edit Profile, which is listed in the My Account section. This link takes you to your profile on WordPress.com. Your API key (which you shouldn't share with anyone) is listed right below the header Your Profile and Personal Options.

After you enter your API key, you have one more decision to make: whether you want Akismet to discard spam comments on posts more than a month old (Figure 10.15). By default, this option is disabled, which means that spam comments on posts older than a month are treated just like any other potential spam comments: marked as spam and held in a queue for 15 days. If you don't mark them as not spam, the comments are deleted after 15 days.
